Jeli Coconut Project
The Jeli Coconut Project is a pilot for an international cultural exchange center without walls in Port Antonio, Jamaica. The Jeli Coconut Project is a youth based arts project spanning Los Angeles and Port Antonio, Jamaica initially. It will eventually expand to the African/ Caribbean diaspora.
The first phase consists of an initial collaboration between the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), the Portland Art Gallery (PAG), Jeli Coconut and initially one Los Angeles based art professional (with plans to expand to at least three Los Angeles based art professionals per year).
The goal of the collaboration is setting the foundation for a Junior Art center in Port Antonio that will be a community based art center for ongoing international cultural exchanges between L.A and the city of Port Antonio, in the parish of Portland, Jamaica.
The Jeli Coconut Project pilot is comprised of the following major components: a 3 week art residency for a team artists who will conduct a 1 week summer art education program for 10 youth ages 13-20 years, and one 2-hour long professional development workshop in collaboration with the JCDC for 5 self-taught Port Antonio based professional artists at the Portland Art Gallery.
GOALS
